Uralkali IT Project named Winner of ‘Project of the Year 2019’

Uralkali’s project ‘Implementing a Mining-geological Information System (MGIS) — digital mining twin’ was named the best IT project in Russia and CIS (in the category for ‘Best industry solution’ in the ‘Metallurgy and continuous production’ nomination) by the professional community of digital transformation leaders, GlobalCIO|DigitalExperts. A total of 193 IT projects were entered into the contest.

Uralkali’s unique Mining-geological Information System (MGIS), designed to improve mining safety, was brought into pilot production at all of the Company’s mines in 2019.

The MGIS IT solution accumulates and structures mining and geological data obtained during the development of the Verkhnekamskoye deposit within a single three-dimensional information environment. The MGIS is used to analyze and store information on all mines, bed positions, qualitative indicators of the useful component of the ore, void content and backfilling operations, as well as project indicators and other data.

The perspective mining plan for Uralkali’s future mining operations is based on data from IT solution. The system is used to solve complex mining, surveying and geological problems, as well as to perform various calculations. The system also contains digitized archive data on the development of potash salts since 1927, the year the sinking of the first mine in Solikamsk began.

More than 300 Uralkali specialists, including miners, geologists, surveyors, and geo-mechanics, work with various modules of the MGIS online. The system is also used by specialists from JSC VNII Galurgii and the Mining Institute of the Urals Branch of the Russian Academy of Science.

Eduard Smirnov, Uralkali Subsoil Management Director, commented:

Ensuring the safety of our mining operations is our top priority. A unique mining and geological information system is a modern management tool for mining production that enables us to develop the Verkhnekamskoye deposit in a safe and efficient manner.

Kirill Alifanov, Uralkali IT Director, commented:

This recognition is especially valuable to us, because it is awarded based on the vote of IT professionals, and not by manufacturers of similar systems. Thanks to a very effective collaboration between Uralkali’ Subsoil Management Directorate and our IT Directorate, we were able to develop and implement such a complex system.

Uralkali (www.uralkali.com) is one of the world’s largest potash producers and exporters. The Company’s assets consist of 5 mines and 7 ore treatment plants in the towns of Berezniki and Solikamsk (Perm Region, Russia). Uralkali employs more than 12,000 people in the main production unit. Uralkali’s shares are traded on the Moscow Exchange.
