"Uralkali" JSC receives international certificate of compliance with ISO 14001 standard requirements for environment protection management systems

Joint-stock company "Uralkali" has been the first in the city of Berezniki to receive international certificate of compliance with ISO 14001 standard requirements for environment protection management systems. The certificate has been issued for three years by the largest auditing company, "SGS".

In late 2002 "Uralkali" was first in Berezniki to receive a certificate of compliance with Russian requirements for environment protection management systems. In July of the current year the company's environment protection management system was audited for compliance with requirements of the international ISO 14001 standard. The audit commission consisted of representatives of three subsidiaries of the Swiss corporation "SGS". They visited all mining departments of "Uralkali" and examined their systems of operative control of the environment, monitoring and measurement, and waste disposal management. In addition, "SGS" representatives evaluated the level of preparedness of "Uralkali" subdivisions for emergency situations.

The Swiss corporation "SGS" was founded in 1878. Company's staff consists of 30, 000 employees working in 130 countries of the world. The company is the leading member of the International independent organization on certification (IIOC), the European fund for quality management (EFQM) and an active observer at the International accreditation forum (IAF). The corporate head of "SGS" acts as a special advisor to Secretary General of the International Standardization Organization (ISO). The "SGS" group has already certified over 50,000 companies all over the world for compliance of their quality and environment management systems with international standards. Among company's partners are such companies as "Philips", "American Express", "BMW", "Ford", "Shell", "Coca-Cola", "Cannon", and "Nestle". In Russia and CIS countries "SGS" has certified the "Ural Plant of Optical Mechanics", OAO "Ruskhleb", "Uralvagonzavod", OAO "Permtsvetmet", OAO "Saratovskenergomash", OAO "Moscow Plant "Kristall", OAO "Concern Babayevsky" and other enterprises.

Smoking in mines is prohibited.
Work at heights without wearing a safety harness is prohibited.
Work in electrical installations under voltage is prohibited.
It is forbidden to perform work and stay in the bottomhole zone during the operation of the mining machine.
Loading and unloading operations when people are in the danger zone are prohibited.
Working in underground mines with unsecured and/or unassembled roofing is prohibited.
It is forbidden to carry out repairs and maintenance of conveyors without disconnecting from energy sources, use of conveyors for transfer of people and goods (materials and/or equipment), crossing (either above or under) operating conveyors by employees are not allowed.
It is forbidden to carry out welding and flame work in underground mines and mine buildings without the necessary safety measures preventing fire.
