Uralkali has contributed more than 2.5 million rubles to support the charity project for the restoration of the "History of Salt Museum"

The history of Solikamsk is closely connected with the history of salt. The town was founded in the 15th century and developed as a result of its salt production activities. In the late 17th century, it was the centre for the production and sale of “white gold” in Russia. Ust-Borovsky museum, which showcases the history of salt, was set up in buildings that were once part of the salt production plant. All plant structures that were built in the old traditional style have become exhibits. Salt hoisting towers, barrels, salt pans and storehouses are among the museum’s exhibits. Ust-Borovsky museum is a unique site of national significance and the country's only open-air museum of its kind.

The Solikamsk administration and Uralkali launched a new project to develop and expand the "History of Salt Museum". The project will realise the conversion of Ust-Borovsky museum into an interactive museum with developed infrastructure, including access to the Kama river embankment, promenade areas, a pier with a salt barge, a settlement of salt factory workers with log houses and craft stalls, a play zone and souvenir kiosks. The idea to revive the museum was supported by Viktor Basargin, governor of the Perm region.

The presentation of the charity project took place at Ust-Borovsky museum. Sergey Devyatkov, the Mayor of Solikamsk, thanked the town’s citizens and donors for their support, and expressed the hope that by their joint efforts the museum would be preserved for future generations.

For Uralkali’s significant contribution to the project and support of the traditions of Russian philanthropy and charity, Sergey Devyatkov presented a letter of gratitude to Sergey Yakutov, the Head of Production at Solikamsk-3, Solikamsk Duma deputy, and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the salt-making plant.

Sergey Yakutov commented:

Solikamsk existed and developed for almost 600 years thanks to salt production.

Today the Stroganovs’ and Demidovs’ salt pans have been replaced by headframes of Uralkali’s mines. Common food salt is replaced by salts of fertility – potash fertilisers. We are lucky that unique historical sites such as the Lyudmilinskaya well and Ust-Borovsky salt-making plant have been preserved in our town.

The Ust-Borovsky historical site needs conservation and restoration. The salt-making plant deserves to be a landmark, a Solikamsk brand, and a highlight for tourists on a level with the unique churches of the Golden Ring. This is our common history; we need to preserve it for future generations. This is why Uralkali has decided to support the charity project for the restoration of the salt production plant.

Igor Sapko, a native of Solikamsk, Head of the city of Perm and Chairman of Perm City Duma greeted the audience:

It is very important for each of us to remember our history and to honour it. Unfortunately, some museum exhibits are absent today, so we have to put our best efforts into making the museum a great success.

The event was supported by celebrities such as Elena Tsyplakova, Honoured Artist of Russia; Dmitry Ivanov, singer and composer; and Sergey Kuznetsov, General Director of the Public Television of Moscow.

During the event there were workshops on making birch bark salt pots, a video room, a photo exhibition and guided tours. The museum shop was selling souvenirs and salt amulets. A salt auction was held opposite the salt storehouse. Sport enthusiasts were challenged to lift bags of salt, and children participated in a skipping rope competition.

Irina Nikiforova, a Solikamsk citizen, commented:

I am so happy that we had this event. We should not only look into the future; we need to preserve the history of our town.

The "Karavai" and KAMWA bands came onto stage. The event ended with a concert of Sergey Galanin, the leader of the group “SerGa”.
