Uralkali: Let’s Do It! Let’s Clean Up!

Uralkali is taking part in the All-Russia environmental project Let’s Do It! which runs until the middle of September.

The Let’s Do It! project is part of the global Let’s Do It! World Cleanup 2012 campaign, which unites more than 90 countries. 83 regions in Russia, including the Perm region, have joined the project.

Uralkali’s environmental youth movement of potash workers, the Eco Recreation Zone, is taking part. The movement’s activists already have experience in planning and holding public environmental events. Over the last year and a half, members of the Eco Recreation Zone have organised and hosted eight large-scale cleanups in the Upper Kama region.

Uralkali provides all necessary tools for the cleanups, as well as transport for the participants to the sites and equipment to dispose of rubbish at a solid waste dump.

As part of the Let’s Do It! project, an area of forest near the natural spring in the Solikamsk region was cleared of waste on 5 August. In total, 135 rubbish bags were collected, the area near the roadside shelter was cleaned up and signs were put up to remind visitors to keep the area clean.

The next large-scale cleanup, in which more than 200 Uralkali employees will take part, is planned in the Berezniki and Solikamsk area on 15 September. It is on this day that the All-Russiacleanup operation will be taking place.

Furthermore, as part of the Let’s Do It! project, Uralkali is organising a competition at its children’s health rehabilitation centre – Uralskiye Samotsvety – to design the best poster in line with the slogan “Keep the area clean! Together we will preserve the nature of the Perm region!” The best examples of children’s artwork will be used as a template design for posters dedicated to the environment.

Ekaterina Korochkina, Chief Specialist at Uralkali’s Department of Geology, and Head of Eco Recreation Zone, commented:

This is not the first year that our youth environmental movement has advocated for the responsible consumption of resources. This time we participate in an all-Russia campaign. We are proud to have joined millions of people around the world who want to tackle environmental problems.

Additional information

The Let’s Do It! Let’s Clean Up! movement started in 2008 in Estonia where 50,000 people gathered to clean up 10,000 tonnes of illegally-dumped rubbish in five hours. Since then, more than two million volunteers have participated in cleanup actions in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal, India, Slovenia, Serbia, Finland, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, Ukraine, Cambodia, Russia, Hungary and Brazil. Even more countries joined the Let’s Do It! movement in 2012, taking the total to 94. A series of one-day cleanups has been organised this year between 24 March and 25 September.
