Uralkali finances reconstruction project at Berezniki town park

Uralkali has financed development of the reconstruction project of Berezniki town part. Experts from the renowned international architectural firm NBBJ have presented their concept for the reconstruction of Berezniki town park. Uralkali has also invited specialists from the Western Urals Institute for Urban Planning to develop plans for the layout of the park. The cost of developing the project concept amounted to USD 600,000.

According to the project, 48 hectares of the park will be divided into seven zones. One zone will be designed for big events, wh ere a stage and an amphitheater will be located. An educational zone with exhibition pavilions, installations, a botanical garden and a raised footpath will be positioned alongside it.

In the relaxation zone (in the centre of the park), there are plans to install a unique fountain, a large lawn, a network of paths, benches and tents. The relaxation zone will be surrounded by a small decorative pond. An area designated for amusement rides will be four times bigger than the current one.

In the town’s main stadium, which is located in the park, new spectator stands and a café with panoramic windows are planned to be constructed. A hockey pitch; volleyball, basketball and tennis courts; and an ice rink will be built opposite the football pitch. There will also be an area designated for skiing, snowboarding and sledding. Next to the sports area, 0.75 hectares of land have been allotted for the construction of a multi-functional office building. The whole park, including a square in front of the office building, will be open to all the town’s residents.

Sergey Dyakov, head of the administration of Berezniki:

The administration of Berezniki has been looking for an investor for the reconstruction of the town park for a long time. The team that put together the concept to improve the park has provided an excellent idea — the division of the park into zones: relaxation, sports, entertainment, and educational zone. We plan to sign a formal agreement with the company that wins the open tender to build the office complex, according to which the construction of the building will have to take place at the same time as the reconstruction of the park. I am sure that the town will have its park within a few years, and it should be one of the best in Russia.

Alexei Sherbinin, project manager of OJSC Uralkali:

As part of the development of the master plan of the Berezniki-Solikamsk agglomeration, which is also financed by Uralkali, it was decided to commission the specialists of the renowned international architectural firm NBBJ, which has developed the concept for the reconstruction of Berezniki town park and the architectural concept for Uralkali’s new administration building.

We share the view of the project’s developers that the administration building should highlight and accentuate the space in front of the town administration building more prominently, turning it into the centre of Berezniki, and acting as a kind of symbol of the reconstruction of the town’s park and acting as the main gates into the park.

Once a winner is found in the open tender for the rights to use the given plot of land for the construction of the office building, Uralkali is prepared to finance the reconstruction of the town park. On the whole, it is absolutely realistic to complete this project in 2–3 years.

Given our assumptions, the timeframe for the implementation of the town park reconstruction project matches that of the construction of the office building. These are relatively strict deadlines, taking into account the size of the park and the required scope of work by the town administration, but we are confident that we will be able to complete all the tasks in the given period. In addition, the developed concept includes not only the best Russian and global experience for separating the park into zones, but also the recommendations of one of the creators of Berezniki town park — Valentin Mindovsky.

Additional Information

Berezniki town park first opened on 5 June 1936. The famous scientist/forester v. L. Mindovsky played an integral role in its creation. After World War II the park was used as a plant nursery. A fence was built around the park in the 1950s. From the end of the 1970s, under the leadership of L. v. Finkelstein, a great deal of work was carried out to improve the park and update the amusement facilities. As a result, the park won first place in a regional contest in 1980, and was recognised as being «Best in Class» in 1986. In the 1990s, the park went through a tough period as there were insufficient funds to upgrade the attractions whilst the infrastructure fell into disrepair. In the summer of 2012, following a decision by the technical committee, a series of amusement rides have been removed for maintenance.
