Uralkali Lends Its Support to the VITA Junior Basketball League of the Urals and Siberia

On 17 September 2014, the VITA junior basketball league of the Urals and Siberia for 13 and 14 year-olds was launched at the Solikamsk sports and recreation centre. The first round of the league is being held with the support of Uralkali’s project to develop basketball as a popular sport in Berezniki and Solikamsk.

The first round will take place in a round-robin format over 5 days. The remaining three rounds will be held over the course of a year in different cities in the Urals and Siberia. The league winner will take part in the ULEB Youth Euroleague. Two joint teams, consisting of adolescents born in 2000 and 2001, represent Berezniki and Solikamsk under the “Kali Basket” name.

Alexander Usachev, the founder of the Ural-Siberian League and head tournament referee, commented:

We are very pleased that the VITA League tournaments will also take place in Solikamsk this year. Uralkali’s project has been active here for a number of years and for that reason, basketball is popular with children. It is great that young people from Berezniki and Solikamsk will take part in the games and show their skills. We have heard a lot about the Serbian coaches who train the ‘Kali Basket’ teams. All of the participants are looking forward to getting to know a new city and new players.

Sergey Yakutov, Head of Production at Uralkali’s Solikamsk-3, added:

Young basketball players from Berezniki and Solikamsk playing for clubs as part of Uralkali’s programme gained important experience through competitions in Russia, Serbia and Bulgaria this summer. Several teams took part in the traditional ‘BASKETSTREET’ tournaments held on the Town Days in Berezniki and Solikamsk. The League of the Urals and Siberia is a great opportunity for adolescents born in 2000 and 2001 to demonstrate their potential and to push their competitors and teammates to the limit. I think that the tournament will spur sporting activity in Solikamsk, as the strongest teams from the Urals and Siberia are represented here.

Uralkali’s basketball project opens the new season with games in the Urals and Siberia League in Solikamsk. A recruitment campaign for children who wish to play basketball has been announced. In the near future, a new basketball league for schoolchildren, “Kali Basket Junior”, will start in Berezniki and Solikamsk. At the end of the year, the “New Year Hustle” sports festival will be held. More experienced basketball players will take part in various off-site tournaments and competitions, such as the regional championship, an All-Russian tournament in Novosibirsk, the “First Steps” All-Russian tournament in Moscow and the “Uralmash Stars” All-Russian tournament.

The VITA League was launched in October 2011. It was created at the initiative of Dmitry Nosov, the league’s president and the senior Republic referee, and Alexander Usachev, the league’s head referee. This season, twelve teams will participate in the tournament. The basketball clubs come from Novosibirsk, Orsk, Nizhny Tagil, Chelyabinsk, Barnaul, Rubtsovsk, Tobolsk, Svobodny, Yugorsk, Tyumen and Yalutorovsk.
