Field day

On December 5, 2013 in the province of Dak Lak, Vietnam Soils and Fertilizers Research Institute (SFRI), Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VAAS) and agronomic service of the company Uralkali organized a field day for farmers and local authorities.

During the event, the participants visited locations of field experiments and learned about the methods of application of potash fertilizers for growing coffee. The greatest interest in farmers was aroused by the system of split application of potassium chloride, in which the recommended dose of potash is applied not on a single occasion (the traditional way), but is divided into several stages of application, combined with irrigation. This split helps the farmers not only provide optimal supply of nutrients to the plant, but also evenly distribute financial costs of buying and applying fertilizer throughout the year.

In addition to the explanations about the methodology, experts analyzed in detail the results of studies, stating positive impact of potash application for the cultivation of coffee, a traditional crop of the region. Scientists noted an increase in productivity, concentration of caffeine and essential oils, resistance to diseases and pests, as well as increased size of coffee beans. On experimental plots, participants had the opportunity to compare samples of plants grown with traditional and split technologies: the yields of the first category were inferior to the second one by 30%.

Alexei Scherbakov, agronomy director of OJSC Uralkali, commented:

We actively apply our findings to develop effective decision-making models that help farmers apply fertilizer with increased agronomic and economic efficiency. In addition, we constantly cooperate with local authorities and public bodies responsible for the development of regional recommendations for fertilization. Comprehensive work regularly performed in close cooperation with leading research institutes in Vietnam, allows our specialists to introduce the most advanced technology of fertilizer application and do it in the shortest possible time, covering all areas of cultivation of crops.
