The Sustainable Development Goals have been developed by the United Nations (UN SDGs) to promote the welfare of all people and protect the planet from the adverse impact of human activities. The 17 goals reflect the key areas of sustainable development: economic and social development and environmental protection.


Whilst Uralkali recognises the importance of all 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the Company has identified 7 priority SDGs where its activities can offer the greatest contribution. The most significant of these is SDG 2: Zero Hunger.

Our priorities:

UN SDG 2: ZERO HUNGER

Goal 2 Zero Hunger is the most significant for Uralkali. The Company produces a large share of the world’s potassium chloride.

Potassium is an essential element for the development of living organisms. As one of the industry leaders, Uralkali is able to contribute to global food security, helping improve crop productivity and eliminate hunger. The Company’s products are consumed in more than 60 countries around the world.

Uralkali also carries out research and education activities. The Company educates farmers on the benefits of applying potash fertilisers in agriculture. In addition, Uralkali has developed an interactive potash encyclopedia.

UN SDG 3: GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

Uralkali’s contribution:

  • A programme to develop medicine in the region of operation; support for medical institutions and recruitment of qualified personnel
  • Health-resort treatment for Company employees, health improvement programmes for their children
  • Medical check-ups for employees working in hazardous conditions
  • Employees are offered partial reimbursement for sporting activities

UN SDG 6: AVAILABILITY AND SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF WATER AND SANITATION FOR ALL

Uralkali’s contribution:

  • Monitoring and recording water discharge, regularly measuring the volume of withdrawn and discharged water as required by law/li>
  • Using repeated and recycled water supply systems
  • Activities to prevent any negative impact on water bodies, including setting up water circulation systems and the collection of condensate and storm water
  • The Company has set quantitative targets to reduce water consumption by 2022

Uralkali’s contribution:

  • The Company reduces waste by processing waste into products, maximising the extraction of whole ore body and utilising waste for internal needs

  • The Company runs initiatives to improve energy efficiency, and closely monitors and controls emissions of greenhouse gases

Cardinal rules

Smoking in mines is prohibited.
Work at heights without wearing a safety harness is prohibited.
Work in electrical installations under voltage is prohibited.
It is forbidden to perform work and stay in the bottomhole zone during the operation of the mining machine.
Loading and unloading operations when people are in the danger zone are prohibited.
Working in underground mines with unsecured and/or unassembled roofing is prohibited.
It is forbidden to carry out repairs and maintenance of conveyors without disconnecting from energy sources, use of conveyors for transfer of people and goods (materials and/or equipment), crossing (either above or under) operating conveyors by employees are not allowed.
It is forbidden to carry out welding and flame work in underground mines and mine buildings without the necessary safety measures preventing fire.
